Gérard Depardieu is receiving support from the highest political levels: Emmanuel Macron has described the criticism of him as a “manhunt”.
Several women accuse Gérard Depardieu (74) of raping and abusing them. The actor is also criticized for sexist and obscene comments. As a result, his Legion of Honor title is now to be revoked, among other things, and the Paris wax museum also removed his figure. However, Depardieu is now receiving public support from none other than French President Emmanuel Macron (46). On Wednesday evening, Macron spoke of a “manhunt” for Depardieu and said: “I detest that.”
Macron continued that he was a “great admirer” of Depardieu, who was a “great” actor. “He made France known, our great writers, our great personalities.” Macron said he was making France “proud”. He went on to say that “there may be victims, but there is also the presumption of innocence.” France must not slide into an “age of suspicion”.
Culture Minister calls Depardieu a “disgrace for France”
The French Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak (44) described Depardieu’s behavior towards women as a “disgrace for France” and initiated his exclusion from the “Légiòn d’Honneur”. The trigger was a documentary in which Depardieu made numerous vulgar and sexist comments while on a filming trip in North Korea.
Macron apparently sees this differently: The Légiòn d’Honneur is an order “that is not there to moralize people,” he said. “So the Legion of Honor title will not be removed on the basis of a documentary.”
Numerous accusations against Gérard Depardieu
However, there are numerous allegations against Depardieu. An investigation into rape allegations against the actor has been ongoing in France since the end of 2020. At the beginning of December 2023, actress Hélène Darras (42) reported him for sexual assault during filming in 2007. Another report was filed by a Spanish journalist, who is said to have committed a crime against the actor 30 years ago. Depardieu denies all allegations.
