Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich mourns the loss of his father: Torben Ulrich, a former Danish tennis player, has died at the age of 95.
He was a tennis professional, musician, filmmaker, writer and father of a music legend: Torben Ulrich (1928-2023) has now died at the age of 95. This was announced by his son, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich (59).
“95 years of adventure, unique experiences, curiosity, pushing boundaries, questioning the status quo, tennis, music, art, writing… and quite a bit of Danish nonconformism,” Ulrich writes about a series of photos. “Thank you so much! I love you, daddy.”
The first picture is a black and white portrait of Torben Ulrich, others show, among other things, an old newspaper clipping about Ulrich’s tennis career, father and son together in the snowy mountains or Torben Ulrich playing the clarinet.

Torben Ulrich was born in 1928 in Copenhagen’s neighboring municipality of Frederiksberg. From the late 1940s he was active as a tennis player and competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments. At the French Open in 1968 he reached the quarterfinals. Ulrich directed several documentaries and published books on the subject of music. He most recently lived in Seattle, Washington, USA.
