The circumstances of his death are unclear, but according to the Berlin police there is nothing to suggest third-party negligence or suicide.
The 52-year-old, whose father came from Bulgaria, became known in the 1990s as a member of the “RTL Saturday Night” ensemble. In the noughties, Nontschew was seen alongside Otto Waalkes and Ralf Schmitz in comedies such as “7 dwarfs – men alone in the forest” and “7 dwarfs – the forest is not enough” as the dwarf Tschakko.
Most recently, the father of two took part in the “LOL – Last One Laughing” format presented by Bully Herbig on Amazon Prime Video. On the show, comedy celebs make each other laugh. If you twist your face twice, you have to leave the show. The new, recently recorded season is slated to air in early 2022.
“100 comedians in one”
Nontschew, who worked as a breakdancer and beatboxer in the 1980s, was discovered by Hugo Egon Balder. The producer brought him in 1993 for “Saturday Night”. “I’m stunned, infinitely sad and now just mute,” wrote Balder on Twitter. Nontschew’s colleague Torsten Sträter called him a “genius of absurd comedy” on Twitter: “Unique in the abundance of what he was and could do. This man was 100 comedians in one, a crazy lucky bag of humor, a star. It’s so unfair . ” And Bully Herbig wrote: “We shed so many tears of laughter because of you. Now the tears are painful.”
