Short-lived fashion microtrends, primarily spread via TikTok, are extremely popular among Generation Z. A look back at the most important styles of 2023.
Fashion trends on TikTok follow each other almost weekly. Fashion trends – usually identified by the addition of “-core”, “aesthetic” or “girl” – spread rapidly via the social network. The individual trends not only describe the clothing style, but also a kind of attitude to life: The videos for the respective trend often show compilations of outfits, places, films, books and hobbies that are supposed to fit the style.
TikTok is the key element in the creation of microtrends
A uniform overall picture is created that collects millions of clicks, but is forgotten again in a few weeks. That’s why we talk about microtrends. “While trends in general continue to develop and have a more sustainable effect, microtrends are fast-moving and can quickly gain and lose popularity,” explains Stefan Tewes, trend researcher and director of the Future Institute, in an interview with star.

According to the expert, social networks, especially TikTok, have “undeniably become key elements in the emergence and popularization of microtrends.” The algorithm can make a single video go viral in just a few hours. “What’s particularly fascinating is TikTok’s global reach,” says Stefan Tewes. This enables cultural fusion, whereby “trends from different parts of the world are picked up and adapted.”
Microtrends represent belonging and community
TikTok users often react immediately to current events, which in turn can create new trends. And once high-reach influencers pick up on the topics and motifs, the spread of a new microtrend can no longer be stopped.
The short-lived trends are particularly popular with Generation Z. Associating yourself with a microtrend strengthens the feeling of belonging and community. In this way, the fashion trends fulfill a need that is particularly high among the young, insecure generation, explains educational scientist Nina Kolleck in an interview with star.
TikTok Microtrends
Generation Z’s coming of age is taking place against the backdrop of global crises – Corona, war, climate. The need for security and carefree times is even greater. This is exactly what can be found in many micro-trends. The “Vanilla Girls” retreat to the security of their perfect home. Those who emulate the “Old Money” style may long for (financial) stability. The “Tomato Girls” see themselves in times long gone in southern Europe, while “Cottagecore” fans romanticize the slow, peaceful country life. The fashion trends thus become a creative strategy for overcoming the crisis.
