5 sleeping tips: How to get through the hot nights relaxed

About a third of all Germans torment themselves more badly than right through the tropical nights in the current heat. With these tips you will not only find a better way to sleep – you will also get up relaxed again.

Summer 2021 is here, the thermometer is climbing. Sun worshipers cheer, older people groan. But at night even the biggest fans of the hot summer should go laughing at the moment. Because the air masses are so hot that meteorologists announced several tropical nights at the start of the week. And so half of Germany is currently sweating restlessly through the night.

What to do – many ask themselves who, in spite of the wide open window, torment themselves sweaty and dead tired from the sheets in the morning. The stern has put together a few tips that should help you get a good night’s sleep, even on tropical nights.

1. Create a pleasant room climate

With outside temperatures of 35 degrees and more, it is almost impossible to cool the bedroom down to an ideal temperature. Nevertheless: Block out the hot air as best you can and let in the at least halfway cool morning air. Try to avoid the so-called greenhouse effect by darkening the bedroom with blinds or shutters. Because once the hot air is in the room, it does not come out through the window.

2. Take a lukewarm shower

Take a quick shower before you go to bed with lukewarm water. Only when you take a warm shower will the pores of the skin open and the heat that has built up during the day can better escape. You don’t need to rub yourself completely dry afterwards. Just dab yourself off, because you shouldn’t crawl into bed soaking wet either. Otherwise, you may catch a cold.

3. Darken bedrooms

Darken the rooms where you sleep as best you can without stopping the fresh air supply. Because light is a kind of natural alarm clock. As soon as it gets light, the body reduces the production of the sleep hormone melatonin and the night – mostly involuntarily – is over. Exterior shutters are best suited as darkeners. Otherwise, so-called blackout curtains also serve their purpose.

4. Thin sheets, linen nightwear

Temporarily swap your favorite blanket for a thin cotton sheet. Light nightwear made of linen or natural silk not only cools you down, it also absorbs sweat. By the way, an average of one liter of sweat ends up in pillows, blankets and pajamas every night. If you want to sleep completely naked, you should cover yourself consistently, because otherwise there is a risk of catching a cold.

5. Drink, drink, drink

Even if you have paid attention to your fluid balance during the day – add a little more before going to bed. Reach for warm herbal tea (e.g. lemon balm). Cherry juice is also recommended. It is high in melatonin, a natural hormone that regulates sleep and is said to help you find rest more quickly. Experts also advise taking a glass of water or tea to bed with you at the current temperature.

6. Cool bottle at the foot end

What works with a hot water bottle in winter works with the opposite effect in summer. Fill a hot water bottle with water and put it in the refrigerator for a few hours. Before you go to sleep, place the bottle at the foot of your bed.
