Film-ready New Year: Ten cinemas bring Oscar contenders to the screen

As the year draws to a close, it has long become a tradition for a network of country and arthouse cinemas to set themselves one goal: to offer Upper Austria’s cinema fans a special “slide” with exclusive previews.

This year, ten institutions have managed to not only put a cinematic delicacy on “the menu”, but also several films from today until Sunday that will be shown on our screens before their official release (participants and dates are listed below). An overview of the offer:

“Poor Things”

The work of Giorgos Lanthimos (“The Favorite”) is considered the film of the moment in Hollywood and a hot Oscar contender: Emma Stone (“La La Land”) plays a female Frankenstein in it, created by Willem Dafoe. The film officially opens on January 18th. At the turn of the year it can already be seen in Freistadt, Lenzing and Kirchdorf (December 30th each), Wels (December 31st) and Linz (December 31st, City-Kino).

“Priscilla”

In this feature film, Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation”) tells the story of young Elvis from Priscilla’s perspective. The main roles are cast with prominent young stars Jacob Elordi as Elvis and Cailee Spaeny. Officially in cinemas from January 4th, it is showing in Freistadt today and in Linz on December 31st (Moviemento).

“The Holdovers”

Two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne is bringing “The Holdovers” to cinemas (from January 26th in Austria). We are already showing the film about a bizarre, funny teacher-student community in Steyr (December 30th) as well as in Freistadt and in the Moviemento Linz (December 31st each).

“Beloved cook”

In this historical drama (director’s prize in Cannes), the great Juliette Binoche plays a cook who is made advances by a gourmet. The film will officially come to us at the end of February. Now it can be seen at the turn of the year in Bad Leonfelden (today, December 29th), in Lambach, Grein, Freistadt (each December 30th) as well as in Wels, Lenzing and in the Moviemento Linz (each December 31st).

“Stars for dessert”

The French social comedy is based on the real, difficult life of star pastry chef Yazid Ichemrahen. Before the official start (January 7th) it can be experienced in Lambach (today), in Kirchdorf, Bad Leonfelden and Steyr (each on December 30th) as well as in Freistadt and in the Linzer Moviemento (each on December 31st).
