The Junge Theater Linz and its director Nele Neitzke are bringing a youth book classic to the stage: Christine Nöstlinger’s “Konrad or The Child from the Tin Can” has its (sold out) premiere at the Kammerspiele on Saturday in a production by Fanny Brunner.
The book, published in 1975 and nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize a year later, tells of an artist who is addicted to shopping and orders the perfect factory child – something that is widely reported. It’s about a “patchwork family” as well as the “retraining of the perfect factory child to become an anarchist,” says the Viennese director about her sixth, around 80-minute production at the Landestheater Linz, which also addresses topics such as “optimization and competition.” In cooperation with the drama studio, fourth-year students at the Linz Bruckner University Drama Institute share the stage with ensemble members. The stage design was designed by students from the HBLA for artistic design in Linz, which designer Daniel Angermayr also visited at the time. In response to his request, textile (weaving) works were created that “give the room warmth,” says the Vöcklabruck native. Alex Konrad describes his stage music as “anarchic-punky”. Ensemble member Alexander Köfner takes on the role of the title hero “Konrad”, who is accompanied by Gemma Vannuzzi as his friend “Kitti”. Katrin Grumeth and Friedrich Eidenberger can be seen as “parents”. (kasch)
