He died on Thursday at the age of 80, the British news agency PA reported on Friday, citing his wife Helen Snell. In the 1970s, Soul played detective Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson, and Paul Michael Glaser appeared in the crime series as his colleague Dave Starsky.
Like the series “The Streets of San Francisco” and “CHIPs,” “Starsky & Hutch” primarily thrived on high-speed traffic chases in which the tires squealed loudly. But it was more humorous and won a loyal audience in the USA as well as in West Germany at the end of the 1970s.
Based on the television series, a film of the same name was released in 2004, with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson playing the investigative duo. Soul and Glaser made guest appearances.
Soul was born in Chicago in August 1943. Over the course of his career, he also starred in the US series “Here Come the Brides”, in the film “Calahan” with Clint Eastwood and in the Stephen King adaptation “Burn Must Salem”. Soul also took on British citizenship.
His family paid tribute to him as a “beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother”, also mentioning his talent as a singer and storyteller. He died after a brave fight for survival in the presence of his family, the statement said. “His smile, his laugh and his passion for life will be remembered by many whose lives he touched.”
