After just one season Disney+ canceled a series starring two Oscar winners

The series released in May 2023 is based on the novel by Gene Luen Yang and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton responsible for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

On May 24, 2023, it reached Disney+ Neither from here, nor from Chinaa series starring Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeohless than a year after its release, Disney decided to cancel production.

Based on the novel by Gene Luen Yang which chronicles the trials and tribulations of a teenager whose life changes forever when he befriends the son of a mythological god. Neither from here, nor from China is the story of a young man’s battle for his own identity through family, comedy and Kung-Fu action.

The coming-of-age adventure features an all-star international cast including award-winning actors Oscar Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan (Everything everywhere at the same time); Ben Wang (You can do it Chang); Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season), twice nominated for the International Emmy Awards; Chin Han (Mortal Kombat); Daniel Wu (Reminiscence); former taekwondo champion Jimmy Liu; and Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic).

Introducing audiences to a pantheon of mythical Chinese characters, the Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu plays Shiji Niangniang, the goddess of Stones; Ronny Chieng is the unconventional monk Ji Gong; Jimmy O. Yang It is Dragon King Ao Guang; James Hong He is Jade Emperor; Leonard Wu is Niu Mowang/Bull Demon; and Poppy Liu It’s Princess Iron Fan. The series also features Lisa Lu like acupuncturist Ni Yang already Rosalie Chiang like student activist Suzy Nakamura.

Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers, Central Park) is executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; Short Term 12) is the director and also serves as executive producer along with Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (both of Doogie Kamealoha. MD, Jumanji: Into the Jungle, Jumanji : The Next Level), Erin O’Malley (Doogie Kamealoha, MD), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12, Seeking Justice), and Gene Luen Yang.
