Police in Los Angeles are stepping up their forces ahead of the Golden Globes. Because there are fears of unrest at the awards ceremony.
Ahead of the Golden Globes on Sunday, police in Los Angeles are preparing for possible protests and disruptions. As “The Hollywood Reporter” reported, unrest is particularly feared because of the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Additional police forces
The industry service cites insiders who are concerned that activists could exploit the global reach of the opening event of the major awards season for their own purposes. It is the first Hollywood gala to be televised since the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. Beverly Hills police told The Hollywood Reporter that they are working with neighboring law enforcement agencies as well as the FBI to prepare for protests. “At this point we are not aware of any threats to the events or their participants. However, we are aware of world events,” said Lieutenant Renato Moreno. “As a result, we have hired additional police personnel.”
The FBI, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Police Department, Fire Department and other local government agencies, prepares so-called “Special Event Threat Assessments” in advance of high-profile entertainment industry gatherings to assist private security planners and law enforcement personnel. Those reports highlight potential concerns, such as attacks by extremist groups, as well as “possible indicators of pre-operational surveillance or attack planning,” a memo said. Attempts to obtain sensitive information about security measures in the facility and in the immediate surroundings are observed.
Solidarity march planned for the afternoon
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators have repeatedly blocked major roads throughout the Los Angeles area in recent months and attempted to use sit-ins to draw attention to the growing death toll in Gaza. Police have broken up such activity at the busy intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue outside LAX and along the 110 Freeway in downtown LA.
A solidarity march calling for a ceasefire and an end to U.S. aid to Israel will take place on the afternoon of Globes Sunday. This is scheduled to take place in front of the Israeli Consulate General in West LA – about 3.5 miles from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where the Globes will be presented on January 7th.
The films “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are considered favorites for the evening. But the German actress Sandra Hülser (45) can also have hope: she is nominated for best actress.
