A4 in Thuringia: motorist slows down a car with an unconscious woman

With the presence of mind, a driver on the A4 realized that the woman in the vehicle next to him had passed out. The contract soldier acted quickly – and just right.

Denis Gebhardt acted very intuitively and reflexively: the 29-year-old noticed on Wednesday on the A4 between the Gotha and Wandersleben connections while overtaking another car that the driver of the car had passed out. With presence of mind, he sat down with his car in front of the other car and slowly braked it with a slight collision, the motorway police said. In doing so, Gebhardt prevented worse: a serious accident, possibly even fatal.

“I pushed the Opel back into the right lane, overtook it and sat in front of it. Then I braked it from 80 km / h until the engine went out,” the regular soldier from Weimar described the process to “Bild”. After the vehicle had come to a standstill, Gebhardt took the unconscious 22-year-old woman out of the car and provided first aid. The driver was apparently dehydrated and had to be hospitalized. A seven-year-old boy who was also in the car was not harmed.

50 to 100 drivers didn’t help

Gebhardt doesn’t make a big fuss about his rescue act, he said to the MDR: “It goes without saying that something like this has to be done: if someone needs help, he gets help.” But it’s not that simple – he had to experience it himself. “Certainly 50 to 100 vehicles” drove past the car without taking any action. “And no one was able to take out their phone and dial 911.”

The Bundeswehr corporal Gebhardt had become aware of the car because the hazard warning lights were switched on – nevertheless the vehicle made no move to pull over to the right. As it turned out later, the seven-year-old passenger had switched on the hazard warning lights and thus also did his part in the rescue.
