Catherine Schmidt is to become the new editor-in-chief of the “Wiener Zeitung” (WZ). The 40-year-old had been interim editor-in-chief of the WZ for months after the federal government discontinued the daily print edition of the daily newspaper and placed a focus on online. She prevailed against 55 other applicants and now has to be confirmed by the WZ editorial team in a vote. According to the editorial statutes, the WZ editorial team can reject a new editor-in-chief with a two-thirds majority.
Aleksandra Tulej and Sebastian Pumberger will be her deputies. Schmidt has been working for the “Wiener Zeitung” since 2004.
The “Wiener Zeitung” was discontinued as a daily print newspaper in July based on a much criticized decision by the black-green federal government. The WZ is now focusing on online journalism with a much smaller team.
