Carriage, speech and gun salute: everything is ready for the change of throne. The plan for Sunday at a glance.

The Danish royal family has published a detailed schedule for the highly anticipated change of throne on Sunday.

Early on Sunday afternoon, the abdicating Queen Margrethe II and her son Crown Prince Frederik will make their way from Amalienborg Palace to Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen – the monarch by carriage at 1:37 p.m., the future monarch with his wife Crown Princess Mary and his eldest son Prince Christian arrived by car two minutes earlier.

Change of throne in the afternoon

At a meeting with the government, the Queen will then sign a declaration of her abdication – at this moment the change of throne will take place before Margrethe drives back to her palace in Amalienborg Palace at around 2.15 p.m.

At 3 p.m. the new King Frederik X will step onto the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, after which Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will officially proclaim the change of throne. Frederik then gives a speech to the people and ends it with his motto.

Gun salutes follow in the harbor, while at the same time the royal flag is lowered at Margrethe’s palace and hoisted at Frederik’s palace. At 3:30 p.m. the new royal couple will drive back to Amalienborg Palace in a carriage – probably accompanied by countless cheering Danes on the side of the road.
