In that context, Cox revealed what the axes of the series are: “Maya is a deaf indigenous person who has two families: a biological one and an adoptive one. She is trying to reconnect with her biological family after her adoptive uncle betrays her ( Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, in Hawkeye). “I hope we all get to see him rediscover who his family is and a deeper, more complicated life than he used to have.”

For his part, D’Onofrio referred to the return of his villain Wilson Fisk, who makes his third appearance after the success of the Daredevil series on Netflix. “It’s all in the scripts,” says D’Onofrio regarding when his character shines brightest, adding: “It’s very exciting when the series has a darker tone, I think “That’s the tone where my character has his best moments.”

Another of the central themes in the series is indigenous culture, represented in Echo through the Choctaw Nation. “Representation was always part of the series and we wanted to do two things: ask their permission and have a dialogue,” said the director. Sydney Freeland and pointed out that Native American cultures “They are not a monolith, they have different languages and specificities of each tribe” that they wanted to show in the series and not just tell them “no, this is your story that we are going to tell.”
Finally, Brad Winderbaum of Marvel Studiosreferred to the fact that this is the first Marvel series for an audience over 17 years of age and assured that it was a decision coming from the story itself.. “Our plan was just to do the series about Maya López and is a character with a violent past, who has to make difficult decisions to face his traumas and finally confront them. By following the character, the tone was created: a darker, more down-to-earth story that turned out to be more adult.”
