“Barbie” star Margot Robbie doesn’t just want to focus on acting and producing films in the future.
“Barbie” was the big cinema success of 2023 – and so in the entertainment world there was no getting around leading actress Margot Robbie (33). She not only appeared in Greta Gerwig’s (40) film, she was also co-producer. And in the future, Robbie would like to take a seat in the director’s chair for further projects.
Margot Robbie: “I really want to direct”
“I really want to direct,” Robbie says in an interview. She has wanted this for around seven years. “But I’ve always seen it as a privilege, not a right,” explains the Australian, who has recently appeared in numerous blockbusters. She first caused a stir in Hollywood around ten years ago – alongside Leonardo DiCaprio (49) in “The Wolf of Wall Street”.
“I slowly worked towards feeling like I had earned the right to direct […]”, she now continues. She now comes close to this feeling. Robbie was lucky enough to work with many great directors and learned a lot in the process. “It’s such a gift to learn from all these directors first hand,” she says.
When will Robbie’s first film as a director come out?
Margot Robbie is apparently not quite sure when she wants to try her hand at directing for the first time. It could take a while, but it could also happen very soon. For one thing, she’s not in a hurry, “because I feel like I’ll never have enough time to learn all the things I want to learn before I take the plunge.” On the other hand, she feels a certain urge and it becomes too strong: “I don’t know how long I can put it off.”
Apparently she doesn’t plan on getting back in front of the camera anytime soon – even though her last shoot as an actress, that of “Barbie”, was over a year ago. According to her, filming was completed in October 2022. “I also think everyone has probably had enough of the sight of me for now,” jokes Robbie. “I should probably get off screens for a while.” If she were to appear in a film again too quickly, people would surely think: “Her again?” She doesn’t know what’s next in this regard, “but I hope it’s still a while away.”
