The musical director of the Teatro Colón was arrested for a complaint of sexual abuse against minors

The famous British conductor Jan Latham-Koenig, musical director of the Teatro Colón, was accused by the London police of sexual crimes against minors. He was separated from the institution.

Latham-Koenig, 70, was arrested on Wednesday at London’s Victoria station and accused yesterday of organizing or facilitating a sexual crime against a minor and of sexual communication with a minor, as also reported by the British police. The news was announced by the Reuters agency and generated commotion in the world of classical music.

“Faced with the news of an extremely serious complaint against Jan Latham Koening, in the United Kingdom, the Teatro Colón has decided to disassociate him from all current and future activities that he carried out within the Institution,” the theater reported.

In January 2023, Jan Latham-Koenig took over as Musical Director of the Teatro Colón, where he has already conducted numerous symphonic concerts with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic and some opera titles, such as “Faust” last year. Since 2019, he has been founder and Artistic Director of the Britten-Shostakovich Festival Orchestra. In 2022 he debuted at the Festival della Valle d’Itria, Italy, with Prokofiev’s “The Gambler”, Verdi’s “La Traviata” in Dublin with the Brno National Opera Theater and the RTE National Symphony; and at the Atlanta Opera with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.” He has directed “Carmen” with the Tokyo Nikikai Opera Foundation and collaborated with architect Santiago Calatrava for a new production of Poulenc’s “Dialogues of Carmelites” in Turin.

The Teatro Colón has not released any official statement so far. The news has taken everyone by surprise, as was said, and none of the musician’s representatives have responded to the press. The conductor, according to the British police in information released by Reuters, will have to appear before the London Court today.
