Britain bans Calvin Klein advertising featuring FKA Twigs

The ban on Calvin Klein campaign photos by singer FKA Twigs in Great Britain is causing a furor online. According to the supervisory authority, the images are too offensive and irresponsible.

What’s too naked? Great Britain is currently discussing this after the British regulatory authority Advertising Standards Authority decided to ban campaign images from the lingerie brand Calvin Klein in collaboration with singer FKA Twigs. The authority’s argument: The campaign conveys a “stereotypically sexualized objectification of women” and is too offensive and irresponsible in its portrayal. She is referring to the complaint from two people last year who were said to have felt “overly sexualized” by the images.

FKA Twigs on the Calvin Klein campaign: “I don’t see that ‘stereotypically sexualized object'”

In the photos from the spring 2023 campaign, the singer can be seen posing wearing only a denim shirt, with part of her breasts and buttocks visible. According to the ASA, the production draws the viewer’s focus “on the model’s body and not the clothing being advertised.” However, the verdict contradicts the brand’s previous campaigns, whose presentation is similar to the corresponding images, argues the designer himself and the responsible photographer duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. She also portrays FKA Twigs as a “confident woman”.

The singer has now also commented on the debate. She posted the controversial image on Instagram and wrote: “I don’t see that ‘stereotypically sexualized object’, as she called me. I see a beautiful, strong woman of color whose unique body has already overcome more pain than you can imagine.”

She is proud of her body and compares the art she creates with the work of artists like Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt and Grace Jones. Above all, she would like to thank Calvin Klein and the photographers who, through the campaign, gave her the “space” to express herself exactly the way she wants.

The ASA described Kendall Jenner

In addition to FKA Twigs, stars like Kendall Jenner also appeared in the campaign last year. A complaint was also lodged against the depiction of Jenner, but at the time the ASA described the photos as “appropriate for an underwear campaign” and therefore rejected them.
