Greg Danielswho adapted ”The Office” for the United States, based on the British BBC series of the same name, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchantis meeting with his trusted writers to start working on ideas about How to make a continuation of the popular series.
The possible new series is not a reboot, since it would probably take place in a new office with new characters, but it would share the same world as the famous ”mockumentary” format series, where Steve Carell, in his iconic character Michael Scottis the director of Dunder Mifflin in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
As sources told Deadline, Daniels said that a documentary team making a documentary on a different topic is a possibility as a premise for a possible extension of the universe of The Office.
NBC executives have stated many times that they would be interested in a new incarnation of The Office if Daniels has an idea. This isn’t a surprise, given how successful her series was for NBC and the life of its own it has taken on in syndication and especially streaming.
The Office premiered in 2005 with a cast that includes Carell, John Krasinski, rainn Wilson, BJ Novak, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, Leslie David Baker, Melora Hardin, Kate Flannery, Brian Baumgartner, Ed Helms, Oscar Nuñez and Craig Robinson. The show ran for 9 seasons before concluding in 2013, with James Spader taking over leadership following Carell’s departure in season 7.
Is a return of the entire cast possible?
Talks about the series continuing have been floating around almost since the show ended. While Daniels has emphasized several times that he would not be interested in rebooting the series and revisiting the original characters with new actors, He has shown himself open to continuing it in some way.
Coming together to work with some of his closest collaborators seems like a big step forward in making it a reality. However, it is important to note that this is very early development that could lead to a winning idea or nowhere, which is typical at this stage.
While individual members of the original cast could presumably appear in a new franchise series, a full-blown reunion seems to be out of the question. BJ Novak, who was also a writer on the American series, previously told Deadline: “You definitely wouldn’t get everyone back together, that ship has already sailed“.
