A well-rehearsed team will be at the head of the Danish kingdom in the future: the power couple Frederik and Mary will become king and queen of Denmark.
After exactly 52 years under Queen Margrethe II, Denmark has a new monarch today. The coming King Frederik
Among other things, Frederik launched the Royal Run in 2018, in which he and his family run through various cities in the country every year at the end of May with tens of thousands of other Danes. He has completed several marathons, an Ironman and various other physical challenges such as a dog sled expedition through Greenland lasting several months.
Margrethe was considered an excellent speaker, whose New Year’s speeches were part of New Year’s Eve for millions of Danes, just like “Dinner for One” for many Germans. Frederik’s strength, on the other hand, lies more in small talk and direct contact with people.
Big heart and commitment
Crown Princess Mary, who comes from Tasmania, Australia, has been at the side of the previous crown prince for over 20 years and will become queen when the throne changes. The 51-year-old has long been known for her commitment to those who have it difficult. The rights of girls and women around the world are just as important to her as sustainability and nature conservation. She is often described as a fashion icon, speaks fluent Danish and has long won the hearts of Danes with her open, charismatic nature.
With Mary, Australia is in a sense getting its own queen, born Down Under – very similar to what Germany experienced in Sweden with Queen Silvia, who came from Heidelberg and was the wife of the local head of state, King Carl XVI. Gustaf. Speaking of Carl Gustaf: After Margrethe’s resignation, the Swede is now considered the longest-reigning monarch on earth, having been on the throne for 50 years and just under four months.
But back to Denmark: Frederik and Mary are considered a smart and down-to-earth power couple. The two have four children: Prince Christian, who came of age last October, as well as Princess Isabella (16) and the twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine (both 13). A lot will change, especially for Christian, with the change of throne: From now on, as crown prince, he will be at the forefront of the Danish throne. He will therefore also be his father’s first deputy should he be on a trip abroad or otherwise unable to attend.
Long tradition
By the way, it is no coincidence that Frederik’s eldest son is called Christian: In Denmark, it is a centuries-old tradition for the male heirs to the throne to alternate between these two names. Since the Middle Ages, a Frederik has always been succeeded on the throne by a Christian and then another Frederik. Then Queen Margrethe came in 1972 – and now another Frederik.
