“Whiplash: Music and obsession“, of Damien Chazellewas chosen as the best film of all those that have debuted so far at Sundanceaccording to a survey from the independent film festival that is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary this week.
The hit drama film about a percussion student, played by Miles Tellerand his aggressive teacher, played by J. K. Simmonswas positioned as the best of some 4,000 productions that premiered in the history of the festival held annually in Utah, United States, according to a survey revealed on Tuesday.
The film released in 2014, defeated contenders like ”Reserve Dogs” (1992), the debut of Quentin Tarantino as director, who came second, ya’‘Flees!”, by Jordan Peele, who completed the podium. The poll included the votes of more than 500 filmmakers linked to the festival, as well as critics and industry experts.
Besides, ”Little Miss Sunshine” (2006), by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris; and ”memento” (2000), by Christopher Nolan, finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The Festival was co-founded in 1978 by Robert Redford, and is held in Park City, Utah, against sub-zero temperatures and an altitude of 2,150 meters. It is a setting considered key for the industry, since several renowned filmmakers launched their careers there.
“Whiplash“, which opened the edition of the festival in 2014 and won the main audience and jury awardscontinued his season with four Oscar nominations, where he won three, which were: Best Supporting Actorfor JK Simmons, Best assembly and Better sound. The remaining two nominations were Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Chazelle became the youngest winner of the 2016 Academy Awards for Best Director with his next film “La La Land“, an ode to hollywood.

The Film Festival of Sundance of 2024 will be held from Thursday, January 18 to January 28 in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, and some of the films will be available online in the United States in their final weekend.
Some of the most anticipated movies are: A Different Manstarring Sebastian Stan; Freaky Talesby Pedro Pascal and Love Lies Bleedingby Katy O’Brian and Kristen Stewart.
Several stars will be present to promote their films, including: Kristen Stewart, Steven Yeun, Jesse Eisenberg, Kieran Culkin and Saoirse Ronan.
