The production company Sam Productions and the broadcaster TV 2 are working on the development of a fictional series about the life of the recently resigned Queen Margrethe II (83), which so far has the working title “Af Guds nåde”. Translated, this means something like “By God’s grace”. Queen Margrethe abdicated early on Sunday and handed over the throne after a 52-year reign to her son Frederik, who has since become Denmark’s new head of state as King Frederik X. The step was highly unusual by Danish standards: Margrethe’s resignation was the first voluntary abdication of its kind in the kingdom since 1146.

Creative, culture-loving monarch

During her reign, Margrethe was considered a creative, culture-loving monarch. She even designed costumes and parts of the scenography for the film “Ehrengard: The Story of a Seduction”. A musical has already focused on her life at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen.

So now a TV series is to follow. According to the producers, it will tell an important and exciting chapter in modern Danish history – and “with a unique and beloved protagonist that we all know, namely Queen Margrethe II of Denmark,” as it said in a statement. The series is about life at Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen, but above all about “a girl and her family”.

Filming is expected to begin in 2025

Filming is expected to begin in 2025 – who could embody Margrethe and the other characters is still unclear. The aim is to make the series accessible to an international audience, the producers told the German Press Agency. At the moment they are concentrating on working on the series and looking forward to bringing the story to life.
