Nobility: Denmark’s new King Frederik honored at celebratory service

When Margrethe abdicated, her son Frederik took over. He came with his family to a service to mark the change of throne.

Denmark’s new King Frederik X (55) was honored at a church service a week after he took over the throne. He came to Aarhus Cathedral with his wife Queen Mary (51). The festive service began with singing and music, as seen on the Danish Radio broadcast. After the ceremony, Frederik and his family were greeted by waiting people, many holding small Danish flags.

Frederik took over the throne from his mother, Queen Margrethe II (83). The monarch voluntarily abdicated after 52 years of reign in order to pass on responsibility to the next generation. She will retain her title of queen and can also act as her son’s representative in the future.
