Katja Riemann is causing a stir with a new campaign. The actress is fighting with PETA against the down industry.
Katja Riemann (60) has been involved with the animal rights organization PETA for several years. In 2021, the actress promoted a meat-free diet in a vegetable dress. A new campaign aims to target the down industry. In the accompanying photo, Riemann can only be seen wearing a white, blood-stained down jacket. “Every down means animal suffering,” says the accompanying slogan. The motif was photographed by photographer Nela König, who has supported PETA for many years.
“An extremely cruel procedure”
The campaign aims to draw attention to the cruelty of the global down industry, according to a press release from PETA. “In Germany alone, around ten million animals die every year because we make clothing, blankets or other products from them. In many countries, the animals are plucked alive, an extremely cruel procedure,” explains Riemann.
Even in the production of supposedly “responsible” down, the animals suffered “torments from hell,” the statement continues. The animal protection organization reports on geese whose heads were chopped off with an ax while they were fully conscious, or on birds that continued to live for minutes after their throats were cut.
Riemann makes an urgent appeal: “There are alternatives to down or feathers that not only keep you warm, but also look good.” PETA recommends using plant-based and synthetic materials. These are not only animal-friendly, but are often easier to care for and more moisture-resistant than down.
