New subscription models and successful series are putting Netflix back on the road to success. In the past quarter, the streaming portal gained 13.1 million new customers – more than ever before. Netflix currently has 260 million subscribers worldwide.
Success is likely to rest on two pillars. On the one hand, after the end of the writers’ and actors’ strike in Hollywood, Netflix was able to release many new series and films again. The last season of “Sex Education” had 45.7 million views, while the animated film “Leo” with the voice of Adam Sandler recorded 108.1 million views. Overall, according to the analysis company Ampere, Netflix has throttled its releases by 36 percent because the market in particular is oversaturated with series.
New subscription models also contributed to the success. Since the summer, accounts may no longer be shared beyond one household, but the profile owner can add additional members for 4.99 euros per month. There are also now subscriptions that show advertising. Their number rose by 70 percent in the fourth quarter of 2023 – as in the previous quarter. “40 percent of our new customers choose the ad-based subscription,” says Netflix.
Nevertheless, the high number of new customers could only be monetized to a limited extent. Although sales rose to $8.8 billion, the profit of $2.11 per share fell short of the expected $2.22. Netflix blames negative exchange rate effects for this. However, the group still assesses the growth opportunities as good: The market in the areas of pay TV, films and games offers sales opportunities of 600 billion dollars: “Netflix currently only accounts for around five percent of this market.”
