Unemployment and theater: disparate adhesion

Unemployment and theater: disparate adhesion

There are numerous unions linked to culture that adhere to the strike, including AAA, SAGAI, ARTEI, DAC, among others. However, there are more suspensions of theatrical performances in CABA, disparity in Mar del Plata and in Carlos Paz everything works normally.

Although the day of strike and mobilization has the support of numerous unions linked to culture, which have been speaking out for weeks against DNU 70/23 and against the Omnibus Law project, support is irregular due to various factors.

The estimation of who works and who does not, those who stop or reschedule their rest, is very irregular, since the factor of public attendance is added to the different member unions.

In the various unions that bring together cultural workers, a strike and mobilization are called to join the demands of the CGT and the CTA plus the aforementioned rejection of the DNU and Omnibus Law. The guilds and associations linked to culture that are folding are the Argentine Association of Actors, FATRAC (Front of Artists and Cultural Workers), ADEA (scenic designers), DAC (film directors) in response to the state of alert of the INCAA , National Audioviual Space, APIMA, Argentores, PCI (Association of film directors), Dance Emergency Front, Stage management professionals, SAGAI (Society of artists and performers), ARTEI (independent theaters), ADEA, ACTI, ATTIA, ESCENA, FED, MECA, UMI and UNIMA, and many more.

But there is no uniformity between the theatrical places: There are more suspensions in CABA, uneven in Mar del Plata and almost everything is open in Carlos Paz. Each actor, actress or technician decides. Several shows or theaters canceled performances in some cases not because of the strike but because of the problems that the arrival and transfer of the public without night transportation may cause.

There were several theaters that decided to close as soon as the measure was communicated, for example El Picadero, which suspended the performances of “The Heart of Damage” with Marilú Marini and “El loco y la camisa” by Nelson Valente, offering to restore the money of the tickets purchased.

Sebastián Blutrach, president of AADET and producer, owner of El Picadero, told this newspaper: “At AADET a decision is never made because the strikes belong to the workers, not the businessmen, of course we respect the casts’ decision to join. In my case, with what I state publicly about the rejection of measures that strongly attack culture, it seemed logical to me to close in coincidence with the casts. In Mar de Plata most companies stop but it is uneven. It is difficult to stop because it is a limited season with many expenses so each cast decides.”

Ariel Stolier, from La Plaza, told this newspaper: “La Plaza or the Met have their ticket offices open. Although the unions fold, each company decided whether or not to do the show, as in the case of “The Funeral of the Objects.” “, which is presented normally or the Noelia Pace show”. On the other hand, ‘Let’s Vote’ is canceled at the Metropolitan.”

Carlos Rottemberg referred to the situation in Mar del Plata: ““La Jenny” changed its break from Wednesday to Tuesday, “Freud’s Last Session” moved from Wednesday to Thursday and “Bossi” is presented normally. “Piaf” in CABA went from Wednesday to Friday and “Matilda” must be suspended due to the enormous number of people and unions on which it depends as a super-production and company of the Gran Rex theater. There is no uniformity among the theater places.”
