With sunglasses and star DJ Tiësto, Heidi Klum is tackling a new project. For the third time, the top model ventures into the record studio as a singer – now she’s spicing up the hit “Sunglasses At Night”.
Heidi Klum cheekily sticks out her tongue and grins into the camera. She hides her eyes behind black sunglasses – their name and the inscription “Sunglasses At Night” are reflected in them. This is the cover for the 50-year-old’s latest project from Bergisch Gladbach. Supermodel, entrepreneur, fashion designer and presenter – now Klum is once again stepping into the spotlight as a singer.
“Sunglasses At Night” is available from January 26th. The single is also the title song of the upcoming season of “Germany’s Next Top Model”, which starts on February 15th on ProSieben.
With an upbeat beat, Klum sings the catchy refrain “I wear my Sunglasses at Night”, mixed and produced by the Dutch DJ star Tiësto. If you’re out at parties at night and your make-up is slightly smeared, then sunglasses “as a protective shield” would simply be cool, says Klum in the dpa interview.
Her voice went a few octaves lower
She thought the song was “cool” even as a teenager. At that time she was enthusiastic about Depeche Mode, Wham!, Funk, but also 80s and early 90s pop. Canadian pop musician Corey Hart scored a new wave hit in 1984 with “Sunglasses at Night.” The song later became a classic in commercials and video games (“Grand Theft Auto: Vice City”).
Klum admits that she would sing songs like this in the shower all the time. That’s when she came up with the idea of reinterpreting the track’s catchy melody in a new, modern way. Tiësto immediately agreed and said it was “a dream come true” for her.
Her voice is usually very high, Klum admits with a grin. “But I went a few octaves lower. I don’t think it sounds quite as shrill.”
She didn’t get any help from her husband, musician Tom Kaulitz (34), or his brother, Tokio Hotel singer Bill Kaulitz. For people like her – “who maybe can’t sing that well” – there are great machines in the recording studio to help with notes “that are a bit crooked and crooked”.
Her third appearance as a singer
Of course they would have recorded many takes and chosen the best ones. Klum’s conclusion: “You can make music even if you don’t have a great voice, but if the vibe is right and people like it.”
It is Klum’s third appearance as a singer. In 2006, when she was still married to singer Seal, she released the Christmas song “Wonderland”. Two years ago, the top model teamed up with rapper Snoop Dogg for the dance track “Chai Tea with Heidi”, which became the theme song of the 17th season of “Germany’s Next Top Model”.
At 50, Klum doesn’t feel too old to try again. “I think in life you really have to do what you feel like doing,” says Klum. Now she hopes to inspire many people to dance with the song. It’s best to wear sunglasses to let yourself out more, recommends Klum.
She is sure to have an enthusiastic fan: Corey Hart (61) has already congratulated her on the release of the single. “Just like the rest of the world… I have a crush on you too,” the singer wrote on Instagram. He also posted a video with congratulations – almost exactly 40 years after the release of his own song. “You’re a star,” he says, grinning into the camera.
