But the secret star of the show was his wife Victoria Beckham. One clip from the series in particular quickly became famous online: Victoria talks about her childhood and describes herself and her family as “Working class” – and is interrupted from the background by her husband David. “Be honest!”he asks her. And asks: “What kind of car did your father take you to school in?” With a grin, Victoria Beckham has to admit that it was a Rolls Royce.
The scene fit the Beckham brand perfectly: she plays the spoiled Posh Spice, he the casually teasing footballer. “It was quite liberating”she said “Financial Times” about the filming. “I was very aware that I’m usually very controlled in front of cameras. But this was mainly about David and so I took it very relaxed.” This approach brought about a change: Beckham is now regularly approached on the street.
“People come and say how much they enjoyed the documentary”reports the 49-year-old. “I can tell you: they used to be afraid to talk to me!” For a long time, the fashion designer was considered cold and aloof. Beckham fans have known for a long time that Victoria has a knack for comedy: in 2007 she played herself in the scripted reality show. The whole thing only lasted one season, but showed that Beckham didn’t take herself so seriously as an allegedly arrogant diva took. After the success of the Netflix show, British media were already speculating about Victoria having her own documentary series. She hasn’t commented on this yet – many fans would certainly be happy about it.
