While several Oscar nominees are offered on platforms, only one on Netflix is nominated for an Oscar among the most viewed while other shortlists such as “Maestro”, “Nyad” or “Rustin” do not appear among those chosen. In cinema, the Oscar effect is more noticeable although the drop in the general audience is evident.
The films most seen on platforms and in movie theaters have an unavoidable Oscar taste, although there are obvious contrasts. While several Oscar nominees are offered on platforms, if the most viewed are analyzed, only one on Netflix is nominated for an Oscar while other shortlists such as “Teacher”, of and with Bradley Cooper, “Nyad” with Annette Bening and Jodie Foster or “Rustin”with Colman Domingo nominated for best actor, do not appear among those chosen.

On Netflix the most viewed continues to be “The Snow Society”, which after 13 Goya nominations managed to be in the categories of Best International Film and others at the Oscars. It has been at the top of the Netflix ranking for a month, boosted by this Hollywood accolade and is the only shortlist chosen by the platform’s users.

In second place is “Lift, a first-class robbery”, for the second week in that position, in the vein of “La casa de papel” with Ursula Corberó and Kevin Hart, about a master thief courted by his ex-girlfriend and the FBI to carry out an impossible heist with his international team. The difference with “La casa de papel” is that the robbery must be carried out in the air, aboard a flight from London to Zurich.

The third from Netflix is a 2021 film, “A Matter of Blood”, starring Matt Damon about an Oklahoma oil rig operator. It is one of those films that are released, go unnoticed, and are resurrected years later. In fourth place is the premiere “60 Minutes,” about a martial arts fighter who fights for custody of his daughter, while in fifth place is another from three years ago, “The Purge.” As you can see, the only one for the Oscar is the first given that the next ones in the top 10 are “Wild Soul”, “A Day to Die”, John Wick”, Cj7” and Leo.
In cinema the Oscar effect is more noticeable
The most watched movie of the weekend was “With Everyone But You,” starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powellwhich premiered in the United States on December 22 and became a surprise hit with $126 million at the international box office and first in several markets.
In Argentina it was no exception given that dethroned the Disney Pixar film, “Wish.” The first achieved 41,203 spectators in 201 theaters while the second attracted 33,681 spectators and lost 36% of theaters. Its accumulated is 472,544 tickets since the premiere. “Ducks!” dropped to third place with 28,473 attendees and just in fourth place was one for the Oscar, “Poor Creatures”, directed and co-produced by Yorgos Lanthimos with Emma Stone, nominated for the Oscar, which thanks to that rose one place with 27,663 tickets and improved its performance compared to its premiere.
The film by Adrián Suar, “Checkmate” debuted in fifth place with 22,424 attendees on 232 screens, when he was expecting first place like so many of the actor’s premieres that got the lead. “Anatomy of a Fall,” the praised French production also nominated for the Oscars, placed ninth with 11,565 entries. The other two new releases on Thursday did not meet expectations: Masha and the Bear achieved just 8,000 spectators in 148 theaters and Muti: Mortal Rituals, 1,900 in 37.
The period between release Thursday and Sunday once again confirmed that this January is tough for collections. With barely 255 thousand spectators in theaters across the country, which shows a drop of 5% compared to last week, this industry shows a decline that is attributed not only to the lack of content that attracts crowds but also to the cut in entertainment product of the recession and the economic crisis.
So far in January, only 2,115,000 tickets have been sold in contrast to the first month of 2023 when 3,715,000 tickets had been sold. It is worth remembering that with another area of entertainment such as theater, the drop was 29% compared to last year, although it is compared to a month that had the overwhelming success of “Married with Children” that had provided figures that raised the theatrical bar during all year.
