US singer Tracy Chapman will reportedly perform her 1980s smash hit “Fast Car” as a duet at the Grammys.
The legendary singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman (59) has not been seen on stage for several years. This will change in spectacular fashion at the 2024 Grammy Awards on February 5th. As we learned, she is scheduled to perform her 1988 hit “Fast Car” as a duet live on stage at the 66th ceremony of the most important US music award in Los Angeles together with country singer Luke Combs (33).
Unexpected landing in the country charts
In the summer of 2023, Combs’ cover of the song stormed to the top of the Billboard Country Airplay charts. Much to Chapman’s surprise, this made her the first black woman to be the sole songwriter on a number one country hit. She shared her joy and amazement in the following words: “I never thought I would end up on the country charts, but it’s an honor to be there. I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful, that new fans have discovered and embraced ‘Fast Car’.”
The huge success of the cover version led to her song being awarded the Song of the Year award at the Country Music Awards 35 years after its release. However, the publicity-shy musician stayed away from the award ceremony in November 2023 and instead had a short acceptance speech read out on stage. Apparently she doesn’t want to miss the glamorous appearance at the Grammy Awards.
