“I am now taking refuge in numbers so that I am not overwhelmed by emotion.” With these words, Helga Rabl-Stadler presented her last program for the Salzburg Festival yesterday at the Felsenreitschule, which she is leaving at the end of the year after 27 years as president. The numbers are impressive. 5626 events took place during her tenure as part of the world’s largest festival, and 6,094,994 visitors were counted. And then the bar that Rabl-Stadler set for her designated successor as Festival President, Kristina Hammer: The 73-year-old raised more than 160 million euros in sponsorship and patronage funds during her tenure.

An impressive balance sheet, and the program for the 2022 Festival with 174 performances at 17 venues from July 18 to August 31 fits in seamlessly in terms of quality. “There is no anticipatory pessimism when it comes to programming,” says Artistic Director Markus Hinterhäuser, considering the hardship called Corona. In fact, Salzburg has absolutely drawn on a wealth of resources in the fields of opera, drama and concerts. The content bracket is Dante’s “Divine Comedy”.

The opera has four premieres and two new productions (“Aida” and “The Magic Flute”). The first highlight is the staging of a Bartok and Orff double evening (“Duke Bluebeard’s Castle” and “De Temporum Fine Comoedia”), staged by star director Romeo Castellucci. Giacomo Puccini’s “Il Trittico”, staged by Christof Loy, promises great opera cinema. Franz Welser-Möst conducts the Vienna Philharmonic, star soprano Asmik Grigorian sings the main roles in all three parts of the work.
Michael Sturminger’s production of Jedermann, which was so successful this year, will be taken over one-to-one in the theater. So again with Lars Eidinger as Everyman, Verena Altenberger as Buhlschaft and Edith Clever as Death.

Castle actress Marie-Luise Stockinger celebrates her Salzburg debut in Fleisser’s “Ingolstadt”. One can also look forward to an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s “Reigen” directed by Yana Ross. Ten authors were invited to overwrite a scene from the original according to their ideas. (att)
