A Bavarian becomes a Prussian: CSU leader Markus Söder dresses up as Otto von Bismarck at this year’s Franconian carnival.
Now the cat is out of the bag: The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (57, CSU) will appear as none other than Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1815 -1898). The politician himself revealed this on his official Instagram account after keeping a big secret about his costume the previous days. He shared about his transformation in Bismarck on the social media portal
Söder wrote: “Breaking News: Secret revealed… This year’s costume is the old Otto von Bismarck.” Many would have called the former Reich Chancellor “the honest broker of Europe”. As even his great role model and predecessor in the office of Prime Minister and CSU leader Franz Josef Strauss said: “Sometimes Bavaria has to be the last Prussians!” Despite the mood of crisis, you can really celebrate, especially during carnival.
Markus Söder also went as Shrek and Homer Simpson
Söder’s appearance in his native Franconia at the traditional television session “Fastnacht in Franconia” is eagerly awaited every year. The politician appears there almost every year, befitting his status, often in very elaborate costumes. Including Gandalf, Punker, Drag Queen, Shrek and Homer Simpson. Söder has already transformed himself into real people. He also appeared in Veitshöchheim as Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley (72), Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), Luitpold von Bayern (1821-1912) and even Edmund Stoiber (82).
After being elected prime minister in 2019, he surprisingly appeared in a classic suit with only a colorful bow tie. He explained that his new position meant that he would forego real costumes.
