The singer and guitarist of the US cult band The Monkees, Michael Nesmith, is dead. His family said he died peacefully of natural causes in his house on Friday.
Another member of the former US pop rock band The Monkees is dead: singer and guitarist Michael Newsmith has died at the age of 78. This reported, among other things, with reference to a declaration by the family. “With infinite love, we announce that Michael Nesmith died peacefully and of natural causes this morning at his home, surrounded by his family.”
His band colleague Micky Dolenz linked a report on the death of the singer on Twitter on Friday. “I am heartbroken,” wrote Dolenz. He has lost a close friend and partner.

Michael Nesmith, born in Houston, Texas in 1942, became famous in 1966 when he worked with Micky Dolenz (76), Peter Tork (1942-2019) and David “Davy” Jones (1945-2012) for the TV series “The Monkees “was cast. The four men started off as a band under the same name and even landed at number one on the German charts with their single “I’m a Believer”.
After two years and 58 episodes, the Emmy-winning sitcom was discontinued. Michael Nesmith left the group in 1970, but then founded other bands. The musician also released numerous solo albums.
Micky Dolenz is currently the only living member of the former The Monkees. Jones passed away in 2012, Tork in 2019.
