Queen Mary turns 52: Danish palace publishes unusual birthday photo

Mary celebrates her first birthday as Danish queen. But instead of a portrait, the palace published an enchanting private photo of the 52-year-old.

This has probably never happened before: Instead of a perfect portrait, the Danish Royal Palace published an enchanting family photo on Instagram in honor of Queen Mary of Denmark’s 52nd birthday. However, you cannot see her husband, King Frederik X, and their four children, Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and the twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

Instead, the photo is a touching private daddy-daughter snapshot, with Queen Mary casually embracing her Scottish-Australian father John Dalgleish Donaldson. Both smile into the camera.

In the comment on the family photo, followers find out more details: “It’s Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday and she turns 52 today,” the message begins. “To mark the occasion, the Queen has selected an image of a special moment with her father from the recent trip to Australia in December,” it continued. And the photographer is also named: “His Royal Highness Prince Vincent is the photographer.”

With her husband’s accession to the throne, Mary became the new queen of the Scandinavian kingdom on January 14th.
