Toby Keith: US country singer dies at the age of 62

The music world mourns the loss of Toby Keith. The American country singer has succumbed to cancer. He was only 62 years old.

In June 2022, Toby Keith made his illness public. At the time, the country singer announced that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall. Now he has lost the battle against the disease.

The US star died on Monday evening surrounded by his family, as they announced on his Facebook page. “He fought his battle with grace and courage,” the statement said. And further: “Please respect his family’s privacy at this time.”

When the musician made his illness public, he had already spent the last six months “with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery,” as he wrote. “So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax,” he let his fans know.

Toby Keith released more than 20 albums during his lifetime

Keith was considered one of the biggest names in country music in the USA. Over the course of his three-decade career, he released 24 studio and compilation albums as well as two Christmas albums, grossing $40 million worldwide.

His most famous tracks include “Should Have Been A Cowboy”, “As Good As I Once Was” and “Beer for My Horses”, a duet with Willie Nelson from 2005.

Last September, Keith accepted the Country Music Icon Award at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards. After accepting the statue, he gave a speech in which he commented on his cancer diagnosis and enormous weight loss with the words: “I bet you thought you’d never see me in skinny jeans.” He also thanked the good Lord who had been with him “for quite some time.”

Before his career as a singer, Keith worked in the oil fields of Oklahoma and later played semi-pro football. He once said about his songs: “I write about life, I sing about life and I don’t analyze things too much.”
