The legends of cinema Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro They have collaborated successfully for decades. Over time, Scorsese has seen something of himself in the characters De Niro has played, the director said in an interview on the BBC.
Speaking on the Radio4 Today programme, the director of Killers of the Flower Moon praised De Niro for “touching on a truth about what it is to be a human being and the acceptance of not only good but evil and wrong, to the extent that you can deplore his behavior, but as a character you still feel something for him.” ”.
Responding to a question about whether “there’s a little bit of you” in the characters De Niro has played, Scorsese said: “I’m sure. I think so. “Denying it is something that is a lie”.
He added: “And if there is an element of that, then let’s explore it in myself if I can, and I’ve been lucky enough to find these muses like De Niro and Harvey Keitel, to a certain extent.”
Scorsese has directed De Niro in several classic films over the years, including Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfella. More recently, the two teamed up to Killers of the Flower Moonfor which both are nominated for an Oscar.
Both men grew up in the Little Italy district of New York and both have Italian and Catholic heritage.
Martin Scorsese and his concern for current cinema
During the interview, Scorsese, who won an Oscar in 2007 for The Departedalso addressed his concerns about immersive and 3D movies, which, he said, “are almost not movies anymore.”
Scorsese noted that there is an “intimacy of character” that is missing in what he called “archetypal” films that focus on “the good and the bad.”
“I think about the younger people who see [esas películas] and thinks that cinema can be just that”said.
The comments add to the criticism that Scorsese has made in the past of films by Marvel and other modern franchises.
