A verdict is expected soon in the Dani Alves rape case. What threatens the ex-footballer if he is found guilty?
Former soccer star Dani Alves (40) has been in custody for more than a year now. The allegations against the South American, who played over 250 games for FC Barcelona and appeared 126 times for the Brazilian national team, are serious: a woman who was 23 at the time of the alleged crime claims that she was raped by Alves in a nightclub in 2022 to have been.
The trial began in Barcelona last Monday (February 5th), and the accused himself has now testified. He tearfully asserted that the sexual acts were consensual. What didn’t help his credibility as the case progressed was that when the allegations were first made, Alves claimed that he didn’t know the alleged victim at all. It was later said that he lied about this in order not to endanger his marriage.
What happens if you are found guilty?
It is assumed that the responsible judges will make a judgment by the end of the month. The penalty for rape in Spain is between four and 15 years. The public prosecutor’s office has demanded nine years’ imprisonment and a fine of 150,000 euros; the plaintiff’s lawyers want Alves behind bars for twelve years.
Alves was arrested in January last year and has been in custody ever since. Several applications to release him on bail were rejected due to the risk of absconding.
