Star chef Alfons Schuhbeck is serving a prison sentence for tax evasion. He was recently transferred to another prison and is released. His good friend, cabaret artist Monika Gruber, commented on Schuhbeck’s situation.
Alfons Schuhbeck has built an empire for himself as a chef and restaurateur, but recently his world began to falter. The 74-year-old was sentenced to three years and two months in prison in 2022 for tax evasion. He is said to have smuggled around 2.3 million euros past the tax authorities. Schuhbeck appealed – without success. The verdict became final last year. In August 2023, Schuhbeck began his prison sentence in the Landsberg prison.
After six months, the celebrity chef was recently transferred to another prison. In the Rothenfeld JVA in Andechs, Schuhbeck should enjoy more freedom – and be allowed to leave the prison temporarily as a prisoner. The judiciary did not provide any information about detailed prison conditions, citing personal rights. Schuhbeck’s lawyers also did not comment.
Monika Gruber and Alfons Schuhbeck are close friends
Schuhbeck’s long-time and close friend Monika Gruber spoke to the “Münchner Abendzeitung” about this. “I’m very happy for Alfons, because his everyday life in Landsberg was bearable, but of course not worth living for a man like him, who had been around people practically day and night. I also think the transfer, including the day off, is his age and also appropriate to the crime,” said the cabaret artist.
Gruber had recently publicly criticized Schuhbeck’s prison conditions in the Landsberg prison. “This is really bitter in his old age. Tax evasion is not a trivial offense, but he is being treated like a serious criminal. He was locked up and risked that he would become depressed. The proportionality in the justice system is simply not right,” she said in October 2023 of the “Bild” newspaper.
Now she is in good spirits that the 74-year-old will soon get better. “Alfons will certainly blossom again as soon as he returns to his beloved Platzl!” said Gruber. On the Platzl in downtown Munich, Schuhbeck ran a number of restaurants and shops as well as a cooking school. Because of his dominance on site, he was given the nickname “top dog”.

Alfons Schuhbeck: His eventful life from celebrity favorite to criminal
Schuhbeck was already having financial problems before his conviction and had to file for bankruptcy in 2021. He blamed the lack of Corona aid from the state for his situation, but the public prosecutor’s office was already investigating tax evasion back then.
Schuhbeck remained his private apartment at Platzl. Recently there was a dispute with the homeowner over outstanding rent payments and Schuhbeck was threatened with eviction proceedings. His lawyer said in October 2023: “The debts are largely balanced.” There are discussions about what will happen next with the apartment. Schuhbeck hopes to be able to return to his old home once he has served his sentence.
