For almost the entire month of February, Elton John fans have the opportunity to get hold of the singer’s rare favorite pieces at a big event. The sale also includes numerous watches that the global star has accumulated over the past decades.
However, if you are looking for classics like a Rolex Submariner or a Patek Philippe Nautilus, you will have to look elsewhere. Sir Elton John’s collection is anything but ordinary.
The 31 watches mainly include extravagant examples that Elton John obviously preferred. Diamonds, gemstones, gold – the main thing is that it glitters.
“Cheap” entry-level prices
The current estimated prices that Christie’s has set for individual watches are particularly interesting. Because it would almost be a scandal if the watches, some of which are very rare, actually change hands at these low prices – and not just because of their famous previous owner.
For example, there is the Cartier Crash, an extremely bulky watch that – as the name suggests – looks a bit crushed. Art connoisseurs will immediately be reminded of “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dalí. Here the auction house sets a price of 70,000 to 100,000 US dollars. If you look at relevant trading venues and see how much the rare watch costs, a sale in this price range would be a small sensation. The current market value is around 250,000 to 300,000 euros – and that without the singer’s sweat in the bracelet leather.
At the Leo-Rolex, Elton John had separation pains
Even with supposedly normal models, Elton John didn’t do things by halves. A Rolex Daytona is also part of the collection. Of course a very special one. The model with the reference number 116598SACO is characterized by the fact that the bracelet comes with a leopard look from the factory and the yellow gold watch itself is full of gemstones. Here Christie’s expects 40,000 to 60,000 US dollars.
Here too, the hammer should not fall that low. On the open market, the Daytona cannot be had for less than 70,000 euros. According to Henry Ishikawa, cataloguer in Christie’s watch department, the decision to part with the Rolex was also the hardest for Elton John.
If you look at the collection, you will notice that Elton John apparently preferred Cartier. Because many watches come from the famous French watchmaker.
Ishikawa revealed to “” that he was particularly looking forward to selling the Cartier Tank Normale with blue diamonds. “The watch is extremely rare and has an unparalleled provenance. It has also been a very long time since a similar model was offered at a public auction,” he explained.
Christie’s currently estimates the watch at $20,000 to $30,000.
Even a real Banksy is on sale
However, the auction house is unlikely to make most of its money from watches when the collection starts selling. By far the most expensive offerings include a Banksy painting, a real Keith Haring, rare prints and a Cartier ring with a huge blue sapphire.
