Denzel Washington and Spike Lee prepare a remake of a Kurosawa classic

“Heaven and Hell,” the 1963 film starring Toshiro Mifune, was based on Ed McBain’s novel “King’s Ransom.”

The actor Denzel Washington and the director Spike Lee will reunite in an English reinterpretation of “The heaven and the hell”film by the Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa which premiered in 1963 and will begin production in March, the international press reported.

“The heaven and the hell”the 1963 film starring Toshiro Mifune It was based on the novel by Ed McBain “King’s Ransom”which it tells is the drama of a businessman whose son they try to kidnap but, due to a mistake, they kidnap the son of his driver and also demand the ransom.

Now, according to the specialized site Variety, the remake of Kurosawa’s film will be produced by Apple Original Films and A24 and will be released in theaters before its global launch on the platform. In this new version, Lee will not only be the executive producer but also the screenwriter alongside Alan Fox.

This is the fifth film they will share. Lee and Washington had already worked together on “Mo’ Better Blues”, “Malcolm X”, “The Sacred Game” and “The Perfect Plan”. This is Washington’s second collaboration with Apple Original Films after “The Tragedy of Macbeth”also from A24, which earned Washington his tenth Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

The film will be produced by Todd Black (“Emancipation,” “The Equalizer”) for Escape Artists and Jason Michael Berman (“Air,” “Nine Days”) for Mandalay Pictures. In addition to directing, Lee will serve as executive producer through 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks.
