Sometimes you can get the feeling that diversity doesn’t work, says Max Mutzke. The Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool last year convinced him of the opposite.
For musician Max Mutzke, the ESC is one thing above all: a symbol of functioning diversity. According to Mutzke, in the face of populists and anti-democratic parties, one can get the feeling: “Diversity doesn’t work and people are only against each other,” the singer told the dpa in Berlin. “The Prix was a very important event for me to realize: Yes, diversity at its maximum works better than anything else.”
He particularly noticed this at the music event – which is sometimes still called the Grand Prix – in Liverpool last year, when people from different countries marched happily and proudly through the English city with their flags and traditional costumes. That’s when he thought about taking part this year. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Mutzke’s first ESC participation. This time he knows from experience: “I have to keep my hands off the sweets backstage and open my eyes while singing.”
Max Mutzke will be one of nine musicians taking part in the preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest on May 11th in Malmö on Friday evening. The show “Eurovision Song Contest – The German Finale” will be moderated by Barbara Schöneberger and broadcast live from Berlin on Erste from 10:05 p.m.
