“Golden Globes”: After the scandal on the cuddle course

Hollywood seeks to distance itself from the association of international film journalists behind the Globes. We still haven’t forgotten what the LA Times revealed: There was no African American in the awarding group for 20 years. In the winter of 2020/21 there was a scandal and allegations of corruption also surfaced.

Journalist and presenter Helen Hoehne tried to find a reconciliation yesterday. For eight months, everything was done to be more diverse than ever before. Rap veteran Snoop Dogg read out the nominations. A group of favorites emerged, which one might think, to keep Hollywood works safe: “The Power of the Dog” and “Belfast” each have seven chances. The former is a reimagined western starring London lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch and directed by New Zealander Jane Campion.

“Belfast” is a working-class drama by Belfast-born Kenneth Branagh, who helped his actors from Northern Ireland, Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”) and Jamie Dornan (“Fifty Shades of Gray”), to get a chance. The less promising works like Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” or “Don ?? t Look Up” with Leonardo DiCaprio represent big US cinema. An image that Hollywood would like the Golden Globes to be, succeeded in the nominated actors in the film drama. Out of five, three are African American: Denzel Washington (“Tragedy of Macbeth”), Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Mahershala Ali (“Swan Song”).

This is not entirely due to the Globes. Hollywood has been working on fair representation for years as the streaming services and on-demand broadcasters have been working on. This year they did it very well – see box.
