Maybe that will ease the World Cup disappointment a little. Lewis Hamilton is expected to attend a special ceremony at Windsor Castle.
After the disappointment at the Formula 1 final in Abu Dhabi, World Championship runner-up Lewis Hamilton can look forward to a very special honor this week.
The 35-year-old British record world champion will be officially knighted by Queen Elizabeth II on Wednesday. The solemn ceremony will take place at Windsor Castle after it could not take place due to the corona pandemic last year.
Buckingham Palace announced in December 2020 that Hamilton would be knighted. In 2008, the Mercedes driver was awarded the Order of the British Empire after his first World Cup victory. But the accolade by the Queen is the highest honor for British athletes. Hamilton is the fourth racing driver to receive this honor after Jackie Stewart, Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham.
The Briton narrowly missed his eighth world title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday when he was overtaken by new world champion Max Verstappen on the final kilometers. With eight world championships, Hamilton would have surpassed Michael Schumacher’s record of seven titles as the sole record holder.
