Many celebrities came together at the Royal Albert Hall last night to attend the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, or BAFTA Awards for short.
The BAFTA Awards are Britain’s most important national film awards and have been presented annually since 1948. They are considered the British equivalent of the Oscars in the USA. But there is one big difference to the Oscars: In Great Britain it’s a royal affair and members of the Royal Family take part. However, Prince William had to appear this year without his wife Kate, who is recovering at home from abdominal surgery.
The BAFTA organization is made up of 1,500 exceptional creative minds across film, gaming and television who select the annual nominees and vote on the winners. An award is considered a privilege – and is a milestone for many actors and filmmakers.
BAFTA Awards: Oppenheimer wins a total of seven awards
The big winner in 2024 was the film “Oppenheimer”. The biopic about the physicist of the same name was not only awarded best film. Christopher Nolan also won an award for best director, received awards for editing, cinematography and original music, and Robert Downey Jr. also won an award for best supporting actor. Last but not least, the award for best actor went to Cillian Murphy. The cinema epic was able to win a total of seven awards.
In addition to Murphy as Best Actor, Emma Stone took home an award for Best Actress. In the film “Poor Things” she plays a Frankenstein-esque woman who is captured by the unconventional scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter is brought back to life and from then on tries to live between two dimensions.
