International Cat Day: the advantages of having one at home

February 19, 2024 – 14:01

The dates chosen to celebrate its existence and raise awareness about its care are: February 20, August 8 and October 29.

This Tuesday February 20 we celebrate the first Cat Day of the year. It is the first because (as it could not be otherwise) Cat Day is celebrated more than once a year. The dates chosen to celebrate their existence and raise awareness about their care are: February 20, August 8 and October 29. This makes the cat the only animal in the world that has 3 days of celebration in the year.

Each February 20th is celebrated on International Cat Day in commemoration of the death of presidential cat Socks Clintona relative of former president of the United States Bill Clinton, who was president from 1993 to 2001. In the 90s (influencers did not yet exist), Socks was very famous for being the only feline in American history to wander around the White House, including sneaking into the president’s public events and appearing in the presidential chamber during press events. All this made him achieve great popularity in the US as in the rest of the world. He had his own website and millions of fans sent him letters through the mail from all over the country.

Unfortunately, Socks was diagnosed with cancer and his owners decided to euthanize him precisely on February 20, 2009 at the age of 19 years and 11 months. From that moment on, this day was established by several animal protection organizations, such as International Cat Day, with the aim of paying tribute to these companion animals and promoting an adoption campaign to provide a home for stray animals.

He August 8 It is another of the dates chosen to celebrate the mishis and was established in the year 2002 on the initiative of International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), along with other animal rights groups, with the aim of make the rights of felines visible.

He October 29th It is the last date of the year on which the International Cat Day. This date was born as a national day in the United States and later spread to the rest of the world. It was Colleen Paige, a pet expert, who chose this date to promote feline adoptions and promote the culture of Responsible ownership and coexistence with animals.

Throughout my career as a Veterinarian and kitten caregiver I have met numerous families who have been adopted by beautiful felines. Having a kitten in their life has changed their lives and they couldn’t imagine a world without them.

Therefore, if you are thinking about adopt a kitten or be adopted by one maybe this is the right time.

I tell you the advantages of being related to a michi:

  • Are clean and independent (well, they are not going to go buy their food, but they will take care of bathing themselves and covering their waste with stones)
  • Tea will help you relax when you are under stress and/or distress: their purring is healing and they will come to you when you need them most (they are unconditional)
  • According to a study from the University of Minnesota, those who live with a cat have a 30% less likely to suffer from heart disease.
  • Guaranteed fun: When you least expect it, they will surprise you with some prank that will make you laugh and want to share it with friends. Along the way, you will change the negative topics of conversation: there will be no better conversation topic than your cat’s anecdotes.
  • Watching them sleep and relax will help you see life with other eyes.
  • They don’t take up space: They fit wherever you live and with a couple of shelves you can create an atmosphere “catified” where they feel happy.
  • They don’t need you to take them for a walk (although I have seen several who walk on a leash, they are exceptions).
  • They’re a excellent excuse for when you don’t want to go somewhere: “I can’t, I have to take care of my cat.”

And if you have to travel and can’t take it, there are great proposals (daycare centers, exclusive hotels for cats) where they can take care of it while you see it through photos and videos so you don’t miss it so much.

Go ahead and let yourself be conquered by the beautiful felines, you won’t regret it.
