The society star Ira von Fürstenberg has died at the age of 83. She wasn’t just known as an actress.
Ira von Fürstenberg (1940-2024) died in Rome at the age of 83. She became known as a high society star in the 1960s and 1970s. Over the course of her career, she worked as a model, jewelry designer and actress and appeared in around thirty films, shooting with important directors such as Alberto Lattuada (1914-2005), Mauro Bolognini (1922-2001) and Lamberto Bava (79).
Ira von Fürstenberg: Early wedding caused a scandal
Von Fürstenberg was born in Rome, is said to have grown up in Switzerland and attended boarding school in England. According to Italian media reports, Ira von Fürstenberg was already working as a model at the age of 14. A little later she caused a stir and a scandal when she married Alfonso zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg (1924-2003) in Venice in 1955 at the age of just 15. The couple, who were together until 1960, had two sons, Christoph and Hubertus. The former died in 2006 at the age of just 50. Hubertus is a former ski racer as well as a singer and photographer.
In 1961, Ira von Fürstenberg married the entrepreneur Francisco Matarazzo Pignatari (1916-1977). In 1964 she divorced again. In 1985, an alleged affair with Prince Rainier of Monaco (1923-2005) caused a stir. She is said to have later denied these rumors herself.
