BAFTAs: No appreciation for Matthew Perry – criticism online

The “In Memoriam” portion of every award show remembers deceased film and television stars. However, one name was missing from the BAFTAs: that of “Friends” star Matthew Perry. Now the BAFTA organization was forced to make an explanation.

Matthew Perry moved an audience of millions during his lifetime. As Chandler Bing in “Friends”, but also in various film roles. When the actor died unexpectedly at the end of October last year, fans and friends alike mourned. At the Emmys in January, Perry was honored with a song, but at the BAFTAs, the British film awards, Perry was missing from the “In Memoriam” part.

BAFTAs without recognition of Matthew Perry

This caused irritated reactions among fans and spectators. “Tina Turner was mentioned as an actress, but Matthew Perry wasn’t,” complained one user on X, formerly Twitter. “Very disrespectful,” wrote another. “If there was one thing I was bitterly disappointed about at the BAFTAS tonight, it was the failure to acknowledge the passing of Matthew Perry among the people we lost,” said one audience member. “Shame on you,” said another.

Due to the many complaints online, the BAFTA organization apparently felt compelled to issue an explanation. It seems that an appreciation of Perry has only been postponed, not canceled. “We can confirm that Matthew Perry will be honored at the next BAFTA Television Awards in May 2024,” NBC News quoted a spokesman as saying.

He was honored at the Emmys

At the Emmy Awards in mid-January, one of the most famous “Friends” fans in the USA honored Perry: singer and songwriter Charlie Puth first played his song “I’ll See You Again” with the band The War and Treaty. But towards the end of the “In Memoriam” slideshow there was a transition to a soul version of the “Friends” theme song “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts. The crowd burst into applause.

The actress was found lifeless in his home in Los Angeles on October 28th. In December, the Los Angeles coroner’s office declared that Perry died from the “acute effects of ketamine.”
