“The Teacher’s Room” director: Ilker Catak: I was a troublemaker at school

Ilker Catak is nominated for an Oscar for the drama “The Teacher’s Room”. The German director has fond memories of his school days – even if he used to like to cause trouble there.

The Oscar-nominated German director Ilker Catak (“The Teacher’s Room”) used to like to play the joker at school. “I have good memories of school because learning was easy for me and I was always a good student, but also a bit of a troublemaker,” Catak told the German Press Agency on the sidelines of the Berlinale.

“When I was 12 or 13, I went through a phase where I was looking for provocation and did a lot of nonsense in class: comments, heckling, playing the joker. And I was able to do that because I knew that I got good grades.” He was lucky to have had really good teachers, as the 40-year-old said.

Some teachers then put him in the back row because he caused too much trouble in the front. Sometimes he also confronted her about why he should learn something specific now. He didn’t stress for the sake of stress, “but I also questioned the teachers and sometimes perhaps asked too many questions,” said the director.

Catak is nominated for an Oscar in the category of best international film for “The Teacher’s Room”. The drama is entered into the running as the German entry for the Oscars. It’s about a conflict at a school that gets out of hand. The focus is on a young teacher (Leonie Benesch) who wants to solve a series of thefts at her school.
