Elton John: Superstar souvenirs for eight million dollars

The auction house Christie’s is auctioning off a collection of British superstar Elton John from his former residence in Atlanta.

For thirty years, Elton John (76) used a spacious luxury apartment in Atlanta, Georgia as a residence during his US tours. After completing his big farewell tour last year, he parted ways with the property and now also put the furnishings and memorabilia he had accumulated there under the hammer. On the opening evening of the eight-day event, some extraordinary highlights were already sold – for a total of eight million dollars.

Banksy triptych brings in $2 million

At the sales event “The Collection of Sir Elton John. Goodbye Peachtree Road”, most of the items sold exceeded the initially estimated value many times over. The musician’s Yamaha grand piano, which was valued at $50,000, ended up fetching around $200,000, and a triptych by the art legend Banksy brought the “Rocket Man” almost two million dollars.

Flashy boots at a top price

A pair of silver high platform boots with the red letters “E” and “J” on the sides, which were part of Elton John’s stage outfit in the early 1970s, also attracted great interest. They were estimated at $5,000 to $10,000, but then fetched a hefty price of $94,500. A pair of extravagant sunglasses from the flashy entertainer also changed hands for a mere $22,680.

The other auctions in the sales marathon, which runs from February 21st to 28th, focus on Elton John’s extensive art collection from his Peach Road residence. This had grown so much over the years that the musician quickly rented additional apartments in the same building to house his treasures. These are also expected to bring in a few million dollars at future auctions.
