The Kelly Family, the mega Christmas show!” Will follow from November 2022. including the corresponding album. Christmas plays a big role for the band, as John (54), Patricia (52), Jimmy (50) and Joey Kelly (48) confirm in an interview with the news agency spot on news. You’re releasing a Christmas EP this year, and next year there’s a whole Christmas album and your tour coming up. What does Christmas mean to you?
Jimmy Kelly: Christmas is faith, hope and love. The death of my sister Barby showed me that we don’t know when the hour will come when we have to leave. That’s why I’m all the more happy to be able to make music with my siblings again. Christmas is a very special kind of family time. Having a family is not always easy, but Christmas can help make things along again. Christmas is where God gives himself to us in a special way. That’s why Christmas is a time of joy! The Corona crisis tore us all apart, which is why I am happy to finally get together with my siblings after a long time.
John Kelly: My parents showed me that the true Christmas spirit can be alive all year round within you and with those around you who are in search of it. Christmas is also a time when the inner child comes alive again, and that’s far more important than we think. We should be able to keep it alive all year round.
Joey Kelly: Christmas means a lot to the Kelly Family, and to me personally too. Christmas for the Kelly Family used to be a time when we worked really hard. At the beginning on the road, but also when we got success, we of course always toured a lot. But December 24th and 25th were always days to take a break before moving on between the holidays. We had these two days for the family. The best time for me was of course when my mother was still alive and, of course, my father when we were little too. My mother baked a lot and that was always something very special. I associate Christmas with my mother in particular.
How is your family celebrating Christmas this year?
Jimmy Kelly: On December 24th, on Christmas Eve, we always have a nice meal and then we all go to evening mass together. On the morning of December 25th, there are always presents under the Christmas tree. The children usually wake us very early in the morning because they want to open their presents. We are usually all still in our pajamas, I make coffee for my wife and myself and the children unwrap the presents.
It’s a lazy morning, breakfast is mostly on the side and in the afternoon we go for a walk if the weather is nice. Sometimes grandma and grandpa come or we go to them, all very clichéd, but nice.
Are there certain traditions that you maintain year after year?
Patricia Kelly: Baking at home has been the same for several decades: tartes aux fries. I learned that in France. Ice cream and whipped cream made my kids even better – not to be beaten! It doesn’t matter whether I came home from the tour at three o’clock the night before, I get up on Christmas Eve and bake tartes aux fries.
My husband cooks the turkey or the duck for it, which sometimes turns out a little too dark. We don’t care! The main thing is that everyone is cozy together at home. We hardly drink any alcohol, but for Christmas there is a Spanish drink from my childhood: Pacharán – there was even a small sip for us children back then. It’s inside me so much that we continue to drink it in front of the warm fireplace after dinner.
What do you wish for in 2022?
John Kelly: After we had such deep and emotional moments with our audience on the comeback, I can’t wait to see everyone on tour again. I can already imagine feelings of happiness, tears, laughter … This is so necessary at the moment. It’s been a long dark journey for all of us and we all need some light, a shot of life.
