The Mexican director, winner of the Oscar for best director on two occasions, is working on his next feature film, for which no details of the plot have been revealed.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in negotiations for a film, as yet untitled, of Alejandro González Iñárritu starring Tom Cruise, as reported by the site Deadline. The project would mark Iñárritu’s first English-language film since his breakout hit, ” The Revenant” (2015).

The film is produced and directed by Iñárritu with a new script that he co-wrote in 2023 with Sabina Berman, as well as with Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, his co-writers of ”Birdman” (2014), meeting a decade later. This also marks the first film for Cruise (who will also produce). following the announcement of its strategic partnership with Warner Bros. last month. Legendary is also expected to produce.

This project is being discussed secretly, with no plot details available at this time, other than that it is a new original story written by Iñárritu. What is known is that in recent weeks the Oscar-winning director has been holding meetings with a few select actors, Cruise being one of the first. The A-list movie star was excited to be involved in that next project and she rushed to meet with Iñárritu once she learned that the director was moving forward with his next big studio film. As soon as the meeting was over, Cruise signed on for the film.
The project fits what Cruise, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and WB studio heads Michael DeLuca and Pam Abdy had in mind when the movie star signed his strategic partnership last month with WB, specifically something that is both original and intended to be seen on the world’s biggest screens.
The first major project after the success of ”The Revenant”
It will be Iñárritu’s first major studio film since he directed ”The Revenant”which not only grossed more than $500 million at the global box office, but also led Iñárritu to win his second consecutive Oscar (and Leonardo DiCaprio’s first acting win). Iñárritu took a break after an exhaustive stretch that also included directing his best picture winner, ”Birdman”. She had been toying with some ideas in 2019, but ultimately turned her attention to her passion project Bardo on Netflix and postponed his next big studio movie until now.

”The Revenant” was nominated for 12 Academy Awards at the 88th Academy Awards, winning three of them: Best Director for Iñárritu, Best Actor for DiCaprio, and Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki.
20th Century Studios
As for Cruise, although he spent the last decade making big box office hits like his films ”Mission Impossible” and ‘‘Top Gun: Maverick’, has never shied away from challenging himself with past top directors like Stanley Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson. While he has never won an Oscar, he has earned four nominations, three of which come from acting, and given Iñárritu’s track record of handing out Oscar nominations to actors who have starred in his films, Academy voters will surely take notice a once this movie hits theaters.
